The AI starts with a lot of advantages and only grows stronger over time, so unless the player attacks very quickly he is likely to get overwhelmed. The campaign is actually a lot tougher than it sounds, and is not a particularly good way for new players to learn the game. Because they never realised they were falling behind all along, and the map ought to have been won by turn 30. Quite a lot of people start playing the campaigns, leisurely explore, research, and build up what they think is a nice army, and then in turn 100 or so encounter the AI and are obliterated. What turn was it? How many units did you have, what tier were they, and how many did you face? Most of all, chances are you were simply outnumbered by the AI. Chances are that those Apprentices were hurting you worse than the rock throwers. If you were being beaten, it was not because trebuchets are overpowered. All in all, they're pretty good at defending or attacking forts and cities, but I never bother building them for my field armies. But they cannot defend themselves in close combat at all, they can only fire if they move no more than a single hex, and they can only fire one shot a round agains a single target. They have a powerful long-range attack, they're pretty tough against missile fire, and they're reasonably priced. Nobody claims Halflings are overpowered.īut nobody has ever complained about trebuchets either. There are MANY things in this game that people complain about. If your army is being beaten by trebuchets.
